Evolution of Haneda

1952 - 1954

In 1952, Haneda Army Airbase soon became an international airport, renaming to Tokyo International Airport and a first Passenger Terminal building was built. Tokyo International Airport became the Second busiest airport in Asia and Fourth worldwide in 2009.

Shortly after, Tokyo Monorail opened in 1964, and had become a domestic airport with 3 runways by 1966 when Narita Airport opened, 2 cross runways, A (16R/34L) & B (04/22). And a parallel runway C (16L/34R) to runway B.

2004 - 2010

A new Terminal 2 was opened in 2004, concluding 2 domestic terminals for Haneda.

Its first major expansion saw in 2008, where a new International terminal (Terminal 3) and runway along with the expansion of the existing domestic Terminal 2 is constructed and completed in 2010.

The Terminal 2 expansion started in 2007 and completed in October 2010, bringing double the area for departure and arrival lobbies, more concessionaires and a car park deck with 2300 parking capacity.

The International terminal (Terminal 3) is built separately from Terminal 1 & 2 to separate Domestic and International Airport Operations.

Runway D’s construction completed in October 2010, with an orientation of 05/23, and dimension of 2500m long, 60m wide asphalt surface.

2006 - 2010

The Air traffic Control Tower in Haneda was reconstructed in 2006, gaining 38m in height. The average cost of the new tower is 7bn yen ($0.09m), and only became operational in October 2010 after the construction of runway D is completed. The Tower currently stands at 115.7m and earned the title of the Fourth tallest Control Tower in the World.
