Report 1

Airport Access is how accessible and convenient it is for one to get to a country’s airport, be it via taxis, buses, or by coaches. How convenient it is to access a country’s airport directly infers to how convenient it is for travelers and passengers to travel towards cities from the airport. The destination airport of Flight NH844 is Haneda Airport, Japan. Haneda being Japan’s busiest airport, it is crucial for travelers to be able to access the airport from the cities and vice versa. With an annual tourist count of 85.68 million passengers, airport accessibility allows for smooth and convenient travel to and from Haneda airport.

Haneda airport holds many different types of transportation that enables it to be accessible to all passengers. Transportations include Taxis, Buses, the Tokyo Monorail, Keikyu Railways, and limousine buses. These transportations take people to and from Haneda airport to central cities in Japan. These modes of transport give passengers the option to choose whichever ways they want to use for travel, with considerations like travel prices, how convenient a mode of transport is, which areas it can travel to, and how long the travel time may be. Taxis from Haneda airport can be located at various taxi stands across the airport with prices ranging from 5000 yen to 11000 yen depending on the distance of the travel. Through the timings of 10pm to 5am, there too will be a surcharge on taxi rides of 20% of the fee. Fees of taxis in Haneda airport are higher than other transports due its high dependability and frequent availability. It is convenient to find, adheres to the needs of passenger luggage and travels directly to the given location quicker than in comparison to other transportation as well.

Another more common mode of transport that are chosen by most passengers entering the cities of Japan from Haneda airport, are the use of the Tokyo Monorail and the Keikyu Railways. These transports travel to major cities such as Shinagawa and Hamamatsucho, and offers the option for passengers to change to other railways from connecting stations, giving them access to cities like Osaki and Tokyo. Although these transportations cover a much broader area, it does not give passengers direct access to where they would want to go, in comparison to other transports like taxis. Due to the wider coverage of areas across Japan that these transportations cover, it makes the length of travel much longer for passengers, especially those travelling to cities further away from Haneda airport. The availability of these services is not its strong suit in late night traveling, as Tokyo Monorail operates from the first train at 4 59am on weekdays, to its last train at 12 01am. Similarly, Keikyu Railways operates from its first train timing at 5 26am to its last timing of 12 04 on weekdays. Thus passengers with flights arriving into Japan late at night or early in the morning would not have the option to travel via these services.

However, these services are a cheaper alternative for travel in Japan, with fares of 160 yen travelling from Hamamatsucho to Tokyo station for the Tokyo Monorail and 170 yen from Shinagawa station to Tokyo station for the Keikyu Railways. Tokyo Monorail too has its different types of train service, the Haneda express, the rapid train and the local train. The Haneda express travels to lesser stops and only stop at connecting stops such as Hamamatsucho. The rapid train stops at more stops on its way towards Hamamatsucho, giving passengers more options be it one of those stops being their intended location. Lastly, the local train travels to every stop along the way to Hamamatsucho station, taking the longest however covering most stations giving passengers these options as well. The interval between each train is approximately 4 minutes and can come as early as 3 minute 20 seconds during peak hours.

The last mode of transport would be limousine buses, this type of transport helps with road congestion and connects Haneda airport to many stations such as Tokyo, Chiba and Saitama. People may choose the use of buses more than railway services as they adhere to passengers carrying a number of luggage, which improves their comfort. The availability and convenience of buses are that there is little or no need to transfer to another mode of transport before reaching a passenger’s destination. Passengers proceed to the Bus ticket booths to purchase tickets on the respective places they want to go to, and each bus station across Japan are stated and ticketing officers will guide passengers to the respective bus terminals to board their respective buses. These buses have a travel time between 30 to 80 minutes depending on the distance of one’s station, and have a price ranging from 620 yen to 2000 yen. Late night buses cater to lesser bus stations; however, they give passengers the option to not take Taxis, however late-night buses offer a higher price of nearly two times the price in comparison to standard bus services. Some examples of stations that late night buses cater to are Tokyo, Shinagawa and Akasuka. These bus services depart from Haneda airport around two to three times from the time of 12 50am to 2 20 am, and passengers who use these services can refer to the official Haneda airport website for the exact times of each day of departure.

Residents approaching Haneda airport to depart Japan for overseas trips usually park their cars at the airport’s parking facilities. The international passenger terminal (P5) has a parking capacity of 3000 spaces including handicapped and reserved spaces, and allows passengers or visitors to use its services daily. The parking facilities at Haneda airport are operated by different companies, where P1 and P4 are operated by Japan Airport Terminal Co., Ltd and P2 and P3 are operated by the Airport Environment Improvement Foundation.

Terminal 1 has carparks P1 and P2 while terminal 2 has carparks P3 and P4, and the parking rates are free for the first 30 minutes of a standard vehicle, and increases by 150 yen for every 30 minutes parked, and are charged to a fee of 1500 yen for the first 24 hours. There will be an increase of 300 yen for every hour of the first 5 hours in the following 24-hour period after the first day, and a maximum charge of 1500 for a full day parked. Short term parking (less than 3 hours) in Haneda airport will be more expensive, with parking fees being charged every 30 minutes to an hour, however for long term parking of more than 3 hours, the fees get cheaper as a fee of 1500 yen will only be charged per a full day use. Thus, long term parking is more value for money in comparison to short term parking, attracting people to use these services while travelling overseas. Handicapped individuals who use the parking facilities get a 50 percent discount on the total rate as well.

For long-term remote parking, which is parking by external companies within a close proximity of the airport vicinity, the best companies with the best and cheapest parking rates are Sun parking and Tsubasa parking. Tsubasa parking starts with the standard parking fee of 1500 yen and decreases by 100 to 200 yen per following day that a car is parked. Tsubasa parking also rewards and encourages people to book their services online. For those who do so, a fee of 1000 yen per day is charged. Sun parking however is more used, with it being only a minute away from the Ukishima exit via the Tokyo expressway bay shore route. Sun parking also has advantages for ANA members, as paying with one’s ANA card redeems them 1 mile in the ANA mileage club for every 100-yen spent with Sun parking. Although Sun parking is relatively more expensive in comparison to Tsubasa parking, Sun parking provides shuttle services to arriving passengers who used their service before departing, or drives one’s car to the parking lot of Haneda airport, making it more convenient for their customers. The parking facilities at Haneda airport are operated by different companies, where P1 and P4 are operated by Japan Airport Terminal Co., Ltd and P2 and P3 are operated by the Airport Environment Improvement Foundation.

Other parking services include shuttered parking services which are provided in carpark P4, however the fee of double the price of a standard parking fee and rate will be charged. Shuttered parking services offers a wider parking space for increased comfort and also offers more privacy for a customer.

The potential constraints and limitations of these parking facilities are the possible parking congestions that may be caused by too many passengers using these facilities. Due to the parking rates decreasing over time, many passengers departing from Haneda airport would choose to leave their vehicles in these parking lots over a long period of time depending on the length of their trip. Thus, road congestion within each terminal may occur due to Haneda being the second most visited airport in Asia. Although the parking facilities of 5 carparks are available for use, they might be too closely built to each other and the terminal buildings as well. Thus, if a major jam or road congestion were to occur within one of the parking facilities or the roads within the terminal, it would affect the entire area of parking facilities P1 to P5.
